Hedges are the most natural form of site boundaries and have been used for centuries to mark boundaries, protect from intruders and to create shelter and privacy.
Firstly they are less costly than a fence or a wall while at the same time they help absorb noise and dust. They also attracts insects, birds and other wildlife and can create an important ecosystem within your garden.
Careful selection is important. Things like location, soil type and exposure most be considered when choosing the correct hedge.
Hedging creates a backdrop for privacy when submitting planning applications as such features assist the development to blend into the surrounding countryside. There are a number of common hedges that provide great privacy to new dwellings. Beech is a vigorous deciduous hedge that is available in two varieties, green and copper. Its holds onto its dead leaf for the winter provide excellent privacy all year around. It thrives in moist but well-drained soils.

Whitethorn; Crataegus Monogyna
Whitethorn, also known as hawthorn, is a deciduous hedge. A large deciduous native shrub. Grown as both informal and formal hedges or in a native hedge. Tolerates wet and shady locations. It provides good privacy along boundaries when planted correctly. In May, the hedgerows and fields of Ireland come alive with great clusters of its beautiful white flowers
Laurel; Prunus Laurocerasus
Laurel is a fast growing dense evergreen hedge with a large distinctive green leaf. It tolerates most soil conditions and will also grow in under the shade of trees and walls etc. It will also tolerate extreme wind conditions and also extremes of heat and cold. It will grow on average at a rate of between 300 and 600mm per year.
Griselenia; Griselenia Littoralis
Originally found in New Zealand, Griselenia is a fast growing dense coastal evergreen hedge that provides excellent privacy all year round. It has a fairly small oval lime green leaf. It should ideally not be planted any more than five miles inland from the coast and is readily affect by frost conditions. Grow in a well-drained soil in full sun.
Privet Ligustrum Ovalofolium
Privet hedging is an evergreen vigorous hedge that is often used for privacy. It has a small leaf and grows at a strong rate in most conditions. It is extremely frost hardy. It’s evergreen in most situations but in extreme cold conditions can lose some of its leaves. Green privet and golden privet are available.
